Size label
The size label contains the information that a consumer is most likely to look for first on a garment.
Consumer protection regulations also require size marking to be mandatory. Therefore, it is particularly important that the size marking is easy to find and read. It is advisable to display it as larger, highlighted text.
More complex, harder-to-read fonts should be avoided.
What sizes should be included as size markings?
Below are examples of some simpler size marking types:
- In adult clothing, we most often encounter the first 2 variations; the size is displayed as either a number or a letter.
- In children's clothing, height marking is usually used.
- Commonly used children's clothing sizing is numbered from the smallest baby size 54 to size 176, in increments of 6. Split size markings are also often used on children's clothing. For example: 128-134.
- In adult clothing, height and letter or number-coded ready-to-wear sizing is also common. For example: 182/66 or 176/L.
- This can also be varied with split number sizing: 200/62-64.
If the product is sold in multiple countries, the sizing used in each country must be indicated:
More accurate and sophisticated size indication is achieved if other size data are also included on the size label. These products are typically made to custom sizes. Let's look at some examples:
As can be seen from the above, it is advisable to display these combined sizes on a so-called "baby size chart" as this makes the sizing visually clear.
In the first figure, in addition to the general (XL) size, the height and chest circumference are also shown.
The second shows the general size, height, waist, and hip measurements.

In each case, the nature of the product determines what size should be displayed on the size label.
The sizes indicated on bedding, children's clothing, or a hat are quite different. The number of variations is endless.
What execution formats can a size marking be displayed in?
The method of attaching the size label can also vary; it can be sewn in folded at the top or in half. It is common for a combined clothing label to be included in the product, which also includes the size. In this case, a separate size marking is not required:
